Previous history

With the change in eating habits at the beginning of the 20th century, when cooked food became increasingly popular, the focus shifted to nutritional medicine. They increasingly began to research the connection between nutrition and health and propagated the consumption of raw foods and whole grains instead of white bread and pasta. Quality before quantity!

1925

The health physician Drs. Dr. h.c. Adolf Roos begins his pioneering Goms study on the formation of dental caries following the development of the valley. This internationally recognized study documents the drastic decrease in physical strength, the increased occurrence of diseases and the deterioration of the teeth of the Gomsers after the construction of the Furka Railway.

1928

Adolf Roos and Leckerly manufacturer Karl Jakob create the wholemeal rye cracker VOLRO. Their aim is to offer healthy and tasty food especially for children.

The VOLRO brand is registered in the Swiss Official Gazette of Commerce.

1928

The Liestal artist and poster designer Otto Plattner (1886 - 1951) creates an advertising poster for the launch of VOLRO.

1930s

Wholemeal bread is gaining recognition through published studies and is increasingly seen as a legitimate luxury food, rather than just a disease food for stomach illnesses, diets or tooth-building crackers.

Wholemeal rye crackers are becoming a luxury item in society.

1940s

Due to rationing, the production of VOLRO comes to a standstill during the war years and is eventually discontinued. Health food becomes a luxury item in society and has little place during the war years.

2023

Karl Jakob Nachf. von J.J. Steiger sel. Erben AG celebrates its 270th birthday! We are taking this as an opportunity to relaunch VOLRO.

The flavors - caraway, rosemary and Fleures des Alpes - are presented as an introduction.

The ingredients for VOLRO crackers are sourced almost exclusively from sustainable Swiss cultivation (Bio Suisse or IP Suisse), with the proportion of sustainably certified Swiss raw materials ranging from 94% to 98%, depending on the variety.

2024

The VOLRO crackers are back!

The original brand image is modernized and contemporary flavours are developed.
